Some years ago, near Seattle, parents dropped off their kids at school and drove through the drive-thru window at a coffee shop. One morning, something unusual happened. After ordering, one person discovered that the person in front of them had anonymously paid for their coffee. Gratefully, the blessed person chose to bless the person behind her. Blessing became contagious. The next person bought for the person behind them. For two hours and twenty-seven customers, everybody bought the next person’s coffee.
Why does God bless people? God is the kind of God who loves to bless his people, to be sure. But God never intended for his blessings to stop with us. Think about desserts being passed around the table. If all the desserts stopped at one seat at the table, we would object. In that scenario we know we are supposed to pass the dessert down the table.
God called Abram to leave his country, people, and father’s household to go to the land he would show him. Abram marched under “sealed orders.” God sent him without telling him his final destination. What if Abram obeyed God’s call? God promised that he would make him into a nation, bless him, make his name great, and make him a blessing to others. God never intended his blessing to stop with us. He has blessed us so that we may be a blessing.
Thinking about the coffee blessings near Seattle, I wondered, who was customer number 28? Who received their free coffee, put their car in drive and took off, “Vroom!” I know for sure, I do not want to be customer number 28 in life. God has been so good to me. You too? Pass it on.
