Carol Anderson Presents the Martin Luther King, Jr. Lecture: The Strangling of American Democracy |
Join us in the Flanagan Chapel, for an incredible opportunity to hear renowned public scholar and bestselling author Carol Anderson, presented as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Endowed Lecture Series.
The lecture will begin at 4 p.m., followed by a reception and book signing from 5–6 p.m., where attendees may bring or purchase one of Ms. Anderson’s books to be signed. For those who cannot attend in person, please RSVP to join the lecture virtually.

In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, this reflective session invites L&C community members from all three campuses to explore issues of inequality and social justice through creative expression, with guidance and support from current graduate students in the Art Therapy program. Canvases, poster boards, and a variety of art materials will be provided, and all finished pieces will be displayed in Watzek Library. Non-alcoholic drink and snacks provided.

| Incarcerated Pen Pal Writing |
Join Prison Abolition Club’s workshop for how to write to currently incarcerated political prisoners, and to talk about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s history as a political prisoner. We’ll be using the Anarchist Black Cross’s information database, as well as Black & Pink PDX’s penpal writing resources to help participants understand ethical and safety boundaries of having incarcerated penpals. This workshop will provide participants with all the necessary resources.

Join the Center for Social Change in assembling care kits for community members experiencing housing insecurity. We’ll also screen the documentary Priced Out to better understand and reflect on the racial inequities that shape our local community. Come to this event to honor the memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. and begin to take action to help others.

| Dr. King, United We Stand: Acts of Civil Disobedience in Solidarity Dinner and Panel |
Join The Office of Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement for a panel discussion honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy by exploring how collective action and courage can propel communities toward equity and justice. Please RSVP for dinner by January 22.

| We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance and Free Society People’s Library Bookmobile |
Join the faculty from Ethnic Studies and Gender Studies for a Teach-In to learn about the ways that these two programs connect with the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a discussion of Kellie Carter Jackson’s book We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance. This Teach-In will also provide a connection between the 2025 Ray Warren Symposium on Race and Ethnic Studies “Sowing Resistance” and the 2026 Gender Studies Symposium “Resist Now.” The Teach-In will also include a visit from the Free Society People’s Library, a local radical bookmobile, which will be on campus with a curated selection of books related to MLK Week, Ethnic Studies, and Gender Studies.
