Live at the Dietrich - by Margie Young

Thank you, Endless Mountains Heritage Region, PA DCNR and the Wyoming County Commissioners, for underwriting the Dietrich's recent program on The Haudenosaunee and the Seven Generations with Leon Briggs

The only historic marker in downtown Tunkhannock is in front of the former Old Store on Tioga Street. It commemorates Sullivan’s March in 1779, the military campaign that marched through our area to destroy the native American people’s land, property and culture, a response to the Iroquois fighting with the British, resulting in the Wyoming Massacre.
“But – we are still here,” proudly stated Leon Briggs, a member of the Tonawanda Seneca Nation, Hawk Clan.  His presentation at the Dietrich last Saturday, sponsored by the Endless Mountains Heritage Region, PA DCNR and the Wyoming County Commissioners, included the challenges and triumphs of being indigenous in our modern world, reminding us that we could be better stewards of our land.  We learned about the Land Back movement and food sovereignty. We seldom have an opportunity to hear points of view from people who come from backgrounds like Leon Briggs, and we thank him for letting us know his side of the story.
The very next day, Chris Norton of WVIA was back to usher in a new series on PBS called Miss Austen, a series that helped prompt Ronnie to schedule a one week fest of Jane Austen films, Friday, April 18 through Thursday, April 24, including multiple showings of Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Clueless, and Jane Austen’s Book Club. You can see the schedule at www.dietrichtheater.com.
The new Miss Austen series on WVIA begins on PBS Masterpiece on May 4, but Chris gave us a sneak preview of the first episode, that makes us wonder why Jane’s sister burned all those letters after she died. Thank you, Chris, for getting us hooked on this series and bringing us so many fun facts about Jane Austen. We also look forward to at least 4 new series that you will preview for us in the near future.
This is a great time to get your favorite seats for Opening Night of Spring Fest on Friday, April 25. I just selected mine and I am thrilled that my grandson Aidan will be joining me. He and his brother love our opening nights and have been coming to them since they were teenagers. Now Aidan has graduated from Penn State and has his first job in Lancaster, but he will drive here to join me. He will enjoy the two movies - Eephus is the first, Bob Trevino Likes It is the second. Eephus is a romance of baseball, a story of two teams of old timers and whether or not they will lose their field.  Bob Trevino Likes It is about an unlikely true friendship when the writer/director tried to find her father online.
Opening Night is always so festive. It seems that all worries are left at the door for an evening of enjoying each other’s company, savoring Nimble Hill wine and beer, tasting hors d’oeuvres from Samario’s, Tioga Bistro, Twigs, the Fireplace Restaurant, Ma Greenley’s BBQ, and choosing your favorite delicacies baked by T&C Grille/bakery 420.  Erica just told me that that Samario’s is treating us this time to Tortellini a la vodka and a chicken, walnut and strawberry salad. Come and see new offerings and old favorite specialties of our famous Tunkhannock eateries. I have my seats.  Now it is time to get yours. $40 in advance or $45 at the door.  Just call the Dietrich at 570-836-1022 x3.
Finally, when I arrived at the Dietrich this morning to write this column, a very excited school group from Tunkhannock Primary Center was arriving to see a movie.  Wishing all of you a beautiful holiday weekend.
