Stripe Rust in Dodge and Columbia Counties; Is it time to spray fungicide for FHB as well?
Winter wheat in Wisconsin continues to move through growth stage ahead of average. This week I have seen many wheat heads emerged and anthers out. We have also confirmed stripe rust in Columbia and Dodge Counties. Now is the time to make a decision on a fungicide application in winter wheat.

The When and Why of Adjuvants
Herbicides used for weed control in agriculture are applied over a wide range of environments, geographies, times, spray carriers, application equipment, pesticide tank mixes, and target species. They often need assistance to maximize weed control and/or minimize risks during the application. Only a few herbicides are formulated with an adjuvant package that can optimize the application in every scenario. Therefore, the applicator often needs additional adjuvants to optimize the herbicide application for the specific conditions of the area being treated.

Does intensive management of wheat yield dividends?
In this study, we sought to determine if higher management intensity indeed led to higher yields, better grain quality, and reduced disease in Wisconsin. In addition, we examined the economic costs and returns on investments for the intensified management strategies in wheat production to determine their profitability for Wisconsin wheat farmers.

Using PSNT to adjust sidedress nitrogen rates in corn
Improving the efficiency of nitrogen (N) applications to corn is fundamental to promoting farm profitability and environmental quality in Wisconsin.
Pre-sidedress Nitrate Test (PSNT) assesses early season N mineralization, as well as N carry-over from the previous growing season and is used to adjust sidedress N application rate.

Field Notes Episode 18: Dairy Heifer Grazing
Like gas and groceries, the cost of trucking and raising dairy heifers out West has gone up. Does this present Wisconsin farmers with an opportunity to lure these animals back to the state with low-input approaches and similar performance standards with well-managed grazing?

Water: A critical and undervalued nutrient in dairy calves
Water is an important nutrient, and it is required in larger amounts by the animal compared with humans. Water contributes to 75 percent of the body weight in calves, making this nutrient an essential daily requirement. The amount of water consumed by the animal depends on animal size, milk production, environmental temperature, feed intake and mineral intake.
Providing water for dairy calves is often an overlooked aspect in calf management programs. Despite concerns related to diarrhea incidences, and combatting freezing temperatures, water is necessary for various biological functions, including a calf’s metabolism.

HPAI Update: USDA clarification on Federal Order for diary cattle
The United States Department of Agriculture recently released additional information about the federal order to assist with developing a baseline of critical information and limiting the spread of H5N1 in dairy cattle, as well as guidelines for shows and fairs.
USDA Updates on HPAI:
- Animals moving interstate to an exhibition, show, or sale may pass the 7-day testing window; is it possible to skip additional testing to return to the first farm? Animals moving interstate to an exhibition, show, or sale must have a negative test result from samples collected within 7 days of movement. These animals may travel to their home herd using the same negative test result provided the exhibition, show, or sale does not exceed 10 days of length.
- Limit animal comingling of animals and follow biosecurity protocols.
- Please check with each exhibition event to understand individual guidelines in place for dairy cattle

Am I required to test for HPAI (H5N1) before transporting my cattle?
Before interstate movement, lactating dairy cattle are required to receive a negative test for Influenza A virus by milk sample at an approved National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) laboratory using an NAHLN-approved assay. Symptomatic (sick) lactating dairy cattle are ineligible for interstate movement or movement to slaughter. Nonlactating dairy cattle – including heifers, dry cows, and bull calves, along with beef cattle – are not currently subject to testing for interstate movement but testing by nasal swab is strongly encouraged.
Proper planning around sample shipping and testing facility schedules should occur. Dairy farmers should work with their herd veterinarian to navigate this process to ensure sample collection and testing take place no more than 7 days before the transport event.

Vaccine and Medicine in Cattle Workshop
This program will help farm personnel to understand the importance of the vaccine and medicine, the proper use and handling, and the consequences of the not proper administration and manipulation of animal health products. Also, they will have a Hands-On demonstration.
