Depression in Adults Increases at Alarming Rate During the Pandemic
AMITA Health Behavioral Medicine Institute is uniquely positioned to help those struggling with depression

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected nearly all of us, including our referral partners throughout Chicagoland. Our clients are suffering and the last five months have taken a toll on them. An increase in depressive symptoms and in the intensity of symptoms is supported by research recently published in the JAMA Network Open. Surveys suggest 28% of those who were questioned are experiencing at least one symptom of depression compared to 8.5% the previous two years.1 This increase in depression is happening at a time when providers need to find new and creative ways to serve their patients both in person and with virtual care. AMITA Health continues to be at the forefront of safety and creativity in serving hundreds of patients daily through its many locations and levels of care.

“It is undeniable that people are suffering. It is also important now more than ever to acknowledge rather than pathologize authentic emotional response. I am often asked as a psychiatrist to explain what is happening around us. To this, I remind myself of what I see in practice every day: there is wrong in the world... there is also goodness and hope. If you are hurting, we are here to help.”

— Dr. Elizabeth Sita, AMITA Health Behavioral Medicine Institute

Depression is a mental health disorder that can be treated with behavioral interventions and medication. AMITA Health is at the forefront of evidence-based therapies including the AMITA Treatment Framework (ATF). This framework provides specific strategies and actions that can be utilized to support our patients through their most difficult time. Sustained improvement in the symptoms of depression is our goal in each and every program at AMITA Health Behavioral Medicine. Success and recovery from depression is our goal with every patient. Below you will find the ATF utilized by our clinicians as adapted from David Barlow's Unified Protocols.
