PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Happy, Healthy, and Safe Thanksgiving!
Hey there!
I hope this email finds you healthy and safe at home during this difficult and uncertain time. With Thanksgiving arriving tomorrow, I have been focusing extra hard on the power of gratitude and its positive impact on our lives.
Anne Frank was living in a closet for 2 years, hiding from the Nazis and a sure death sentence, when she wrote “I lie in bed at night, after ending my prayers with the words 'Ich danke dir für all das Gute und Liebe und Schöne.' (Thank you, God, for all that is good and dear and beautiful.)”
The truth is, sometimes it's really hard to feel grateful. Take 2020, for example. It's been a constant shitstorm. The pandemic has wreaked havoc on the planet. Millions of jobs lost, hundreds of thousands of small businesses have gone under, including fellow EO'ers, many marriages destroyed, and worst of all, many lives lost. I lost my mom in March and almost lost my dad to COVID a month later, so I understand if you're reading this and you're not feeling particularly grateful.
But the amazing thing about gratitude is that it's worth working for because it's so effective in making you happier.
To help inspire you, here are three more quotes from people who were able to feel and express gratitude, despite circumstances that might suggest otherwise:
- Oprah Winfrey, the media mogul who was a victim of childhood sexual abuse: “Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have, you will never, ever have enough.”
- Helen Keller, author and political activist who was left both deaf and blind after developing an illness at 19 months old: “So much has been given me I have no time to ponder over that which has been denied.”
- Elie Wiesel, a Romanian-born author, professor, and activist who was a Jewish prisoner in the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps during the Holocaust: “When a person doesn’t have gratitude, something is missing in his or her humanity. A person can almost be defined by his or her attitude toward gratitude.”
So, my challenge to you, this Thanksgiving, is to summon the courage to let go of your own personal shitstorm of 2020 and make a gratitude list or otherwise express what and who you're grateful for.
I am grateful for my family, and for my teams at my companies, and for EO! I'm grateful for my amazing forum, and for terrific speakers that have taught me and will continue to teach me for the rest of my life.
And I am grateful for YOU, my fellow EO NY'ers!
Happy Thanksgiving!
PS Nominate yourself, or someone else for President Elect- Elect by emailing me at dave@likeable.com. Nominations must be submitted no later than November 30th.
