Hello Gold Mountain is happening next week! Make sure to get your tickets now, and we look forward to seeing you soon.
Before experiencing this beautiful new work, we encourage you to explore the stories of these refugees through the images and recollections of those who lived it. Thanks to the generosity of Peggy Stern Cole and Bill Lasher, we have recently received a number of archival images taken by Melville Jacoby of the actual Shanghai settlement.
We have also created a suggested reading list of some memoirs and historical accounts of the settlement and its inhabitants, which are available at Nashville Public Library:
Photographs of Shanghai in the fall of 1939 were taken by Melville Jacoby, and are courtesy of Peggy Stern Cole via Bill Lascher. To learn more about Jacoby, see the book Eve of a Hundred Midnights, by Bill Lascher.
