Community Meetings
Once again on Friday we celebrated the work of some of our students at a Community Meeting.  Certainly, watching the children read or perform is “adorable.”  But it is much more than that.  Think about how nervous a child gets just before he/she stands up in front of the entire school, including a sizeable number of parents.  Yet, invariably, the child performs well and accomplishes the goal.  Just think about the 3rd graders who performed on KUUMBA Day and then reprised part of that performance at Friday's Community Meeting.  In preparing for the performance they learned a great deal about African culture; they learned to synchronize their body movements into the dance; each child had an opportunity to perform in a small group in front of the larger group.  The sense of accomplishment that these children achieved was amazing.  This type of success is a major confidence builder.
At Friday’s meeting the kindergarten classes, along with their 4th and 5th grade buddies, presented on Martin Luther King.  Again, completely “adorable.”  But look at what went into preparing for this.  The children had to learn about Dr. King.  They collaborated with their older buddies to write something, and then they presented in front of the entire school.
Each performance at a Community Meeting requires preparation, rehearsal and presentation.  They always end with the children feeling a sense of accomplishment.  These short performances also provide an opportunity for children to practice being in front of an audience, something that is a valuable life skill.
And, of course, Community Meetings develop our sense of community, our support for the children and provides an opportunity to celebrate the children’s work.
