November at CLCS, Fall Leadership Institute Registration Closes TOMORROW, and more! |
Dear Friend of CLCS,
It's November, and things are getting chilly! Last Tuesday was election day, when Detroiters elected a new mayor, and workers across the country made their voices heard. November is also Native American Heritage Month. Check out this 2023 panel interview with Indigenous trade unionists from around the world, on inclusion and solidarity.
Looking at the month ahead, our next conference will be the Fall Leadership Institute, November 20-22. The registration deadline is THIS THURSDAY, so get registered TODAY if you'd like to attend! Thursday, November 13 is also the deadline to cancel and receive a refund.
In early December, we'll have another faculty affiliate meeting, and on December 13 we'll host a Saturday Symposium on Democracy and (Worker) Participation. See below for more details!
We want to share information that is relevant and interesting to YOU; if you have feedback or have something you'd like us to share, don't hesitate to shoot us an email! (clcs.labor@umich.edu, or reply directly to this newsletter!) This might include news stories, events to promote, job postings, or anything labor related you'd like shared out!
Monthly newsletters typically will include announcements of upcoming events, media and recaps from past conferences and symposia, and research reports on labor in Michigan. Each newsletter will also have a Labor in the Headlines section, with news items on current events in the labor movement, so be sure to scroll all the way through!
Newsletters will also live on our website, under "News".
In Solidarity,
CLCS Staff

Members of the Newspaper Guild of Pittsburgh-CWA have led a tireless fight and have shown that when we fight we win.
- Workers at the Detroit Institute of Art have announced their union, as part of Cultural Workers United, under the AFSCME umbrella. Workers drew inspiration from the famous Diego Rivera murals.

Hotel workers in Philadelphia and Los Angeles (with UNITE HERE!) strike for affordability, putting pressure on management during a high-volume weekend for each city's hospitality industry.
-
Volkswagen workers in Tennessee voted to authorize a strike in late October, and just last week members of UAW Local 42 stated that VW's final offer isn't sufficient to avoid a work stoppage. Keep your eyes on Chattanooga!
- The SunTrapp, Utah's oldest LGBTQ+ bar, has closed its doors to prevent the unionization of its staff, with Communications Workers of America Local 7765. Workers allege that ownership has engaged in numerous unfair labor practices.
-
Members of Starbucks Workers United across the country have announced a strike unless Starbucks management returns to the bargaining table. Negotiations have stalled since starting in April 2024, and the union's 9500 members are turning up the heat.
-
Community organizing has stepped up in D.C. and nationwide, as many furloughed federal workers struggle to pay for necessities during the government shutdown. Community leaders have raised the alarm on food and utility insecurity.
