Job 1:20-22
At this, Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said:“Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
    and naked I will depart.
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
    may the name of the Lord be praised.”
 In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

New International Version (NIV)
                 When all of life caves in, what then?  We may wonder, “Is God there?  Does God care?”  What would we do if we lost everything?  Where would we turn?

                Job must have wondered.  In a radical reversal, he went from a large family and great wealth to utter decimation and desolation.   What was his response?  First he grieved and then he gave thanks to God.

                In a time of great loss in our family I learned two great truths:  first, as great as our grief is, greater still is our gratitude to God.  We grieve the loss of a loved one because we were so privileged to know them and love them.  Second, I learned that what we believe matters.  Apart from God our despair would know no end.

               When we lose someone we love, or something important to us, of course we should grieve.  Relationship with God offers perspective.  The Lord was the one who gave.  The Lord has taken away.  Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for the good gifts you have given us.  By your goodness we were born.  By your grace we are kept.  By your love, fully revealed in the face of Jesus Christ we are being redeemed.  In his name we pray.  Amen.
  This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
