CHECKLIST ITEMS & UPDATES

Transfer to NYU from another US university?

All transfer students must obtain a new I-20 by Thursday, September 15 in order to maintain F-1 status. Make sure you have completed all steps in our transfer checklist.

Are you registered as a full-time student?

In order to maintain legal status in the US, students in F-1 and J-1 status are required to register full-time, which is a minimum of 12 credits per semester for most NYU programs. Make sure you register full-time or gain approval from OGS to be approved for a reduced course load.

Graduate Students: Check with your department on what they consider full-time enrollment to be. If for any reason you won't be registered full time, you must have OGS permission to be registered for a reduced course load.

Going into your final semester?

Make sure you are aware of your work options after you graduate! If you’re a student in F-1 status, learn more about and apply for Post-Completion OPT by mid-September! If you’re a student in J-1 status, learn more about and apply for academic training!

Off-Campus Employment Options for F-1 Students Webinar

This workshop provides an overview of different types of work authorization (namely CPT and OPT), what to consider when choosing the option that fits for you, and how to get through the application process. We’ll also briefly cover employment-related topics like social security, tax, health insurance, and extensions.

On-campus Employment for F-1 and J-1 Students Webinar

September 14th | 12:30 PM - 1:00 PM ET

Are you an F-1 or J-1 international student who just started (or wants to start) working on campus? This workshop covers the kind of documentation you will be expected to have, how to apply for your Social Security Number (SSN), and a review of tax resources. Learn the basics of this process and get key information on what to expect as you find your on-campus job.

Orientation: New International Student Meeting

September 16th | 9:30 AM - 11:00 AM ET

Is this your first semester at NYU and you missed an earlier new international student meeting for orientation? This meeting is for you! In this meeting we will discuss topics like work, travel, and adjusting to life at NYU with Office of Global Services staff!

You must complete both the US Immigration Requirements Training and the New International Student Welcome to NYU Meeting to fulfill the orientation requirement.

Post-completion OPT Webinar

September 16th l 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM ET

Are you an F-1 international student getting ready to graduate? This workshop is designed to give you a firm understanding of what OPT is (it's a form of work authorization for students in F-1 status), how to apply for OPT, the processing timeline, what documents you’ll need, travel advice, and reporting requirements. We also briefly cover tax, health insurance, and OPT extensions.

The Student Visa Application and Interview: What to Expect

Learn about the process to get (or renew) a US student visa, what to expect for the day of your visa interview, possible outcomes of your student visa application, and resources to turn to if your application is delayed or denied.

How to Prepare your OPT Application for the US Government (USCIS)

September 23rd l 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM ET

After you've received your new OPT I-20, you should attend this session where an OGS advisor will go over how to prepare your OPT application for USCIS. Attend this session to make sure your OPT application meets all the guidelines, before you submit it to USCIS!
