Dear Sanford Alumni and Friends,
On behalf of the Sanford Board of Visitors, I bring September greetings to all of you. While I graduated in ‘94 as a PPS major, and currently work in venture capital, a recent trip back to campus reminded me of the power of our community. In a welcome address to the Class of 2027, University leaders proffered that moments of faltering or failure will occur, that all must actively engage in our community, and emphasized the importance of gratitude.

I recall Duke opening me up to take a more expansive view of the world and my role in it; being inspired to take action, and realizing that, collectively, we can move the needle. For many of us, despite setbacks, our Duke experience has embedded in our DNA a relentlessness that pushes us to pursue those things that serve society. We all seek to have an impact whether by acting, mentoring, lifting, pressing, advocating, or insisting on an alternate path. We all share an outrageous ambition to make this world a better place. Importantly, the gratitude felt for Duke’s role in our lives, and the community we all share, continues to grow.
Do you remember what it was that most inspired you at Duke? Are there ways that you tap into that spirit now? Can Sanford leverage your efforts?
We want to hear from you! Join us on social media to engage with your fellow alumni.

Owen Zighelboim PPS’20 - Community Economic Development Volunteer with the Peace Corps in Fiji.
When I got to Sanford as an undergraduate, I wanted answers. I wanted a professor to tell me what the best way to serve others was and how to do it. What I found instead was a community that wasn’t after answers so much as solutions. And despite the enormity of the issues in question, they kept showing up. Ready to learn, ready to listen.
