Acts 9:10, 36
10  In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!”“Yes, Lord,” he answered.
36  In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor.
New International Version (NIV)
Jesus commissioned his disciples to make disciples.  Do you know a disciple of Jesus?  In trying to understand discipleship we face two extremes.  Some say, “Every Christian is a disciple from the moment they believe in Jesus.  They have arrived at faith and are headed to heaven."  Others seem to make discipleship so esoteric and formulaic that only those who see Christianity as they do are disciples.

How would we know a disciple if we saw one?  Is it their cross-shaped jewelry or their bumper stickers on their cars?  In Acts, we discover two disciples.  First, Ananias was a disciple in Damascus.  As he prayed, God called him to go to Saul the newly converted former persecutor of the church to restore his sight and commission him.  After a momentary hesitation he obeyed and Saul found his sight and his calling.  Disciples obey.   Later Tabitha, or Dorcas, was a disciple who did good works and charity in her community.  When the people wept over her death, Peter restored her to life.

Who is the disciple of Jesus in your neighborhood?  Look for the one who obeys Christ.  Search for the one who is doing good in Jesus’ name.  Then follow them as they follow Christ.

Pray with me:
Father, make us apprentices of Jesus today.  Help us to walk as he walked, talk as he talked, and see people as he saw them.  Show us some Christian who needs to be affirmed today.  Help us to help others in your name.  Turn us into “little Christs” everywhere we go, so that the world may know that we belong to you.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
