Isaiah 26:3-4
You will keep in perfect peace
    those whose minds are steadfast,
    because they trust in you.
 Trust in the Lord forever,
for the Lord, the Lord himself, is the Rock eternal.

New International Version (NIV)
Peace eludes us.  Just when we think we have it in our hands, it slips through our fingertips.  If we are not careful the angry strife in our world will interrupt our fellowship with Christ and each other.  If everyone is walking around with a hammer, everybody starts to look like a nail.
Isaiah’s words help.  Earlier he pointed to a child who would be born and called the Prince of Peace.  Peace personified!  Surely Isaiah longed for answers to the political turmoil of his day.  Maybe a child would bring the peace which had evaded the previous generations.  Thankfully he continued to think and write about the peace he sought.
“You will keep . . .”  God is working to keep us.  He is the only one who can save us from our pugilistic and polemical instincts.  Because God lives in perfect peace he can keep us in perfect peace.  How does he do it?  When our minds are steadfast, “stayed on him,” as the King James version states it.  But how can I be sure my mind is stayed on him?  Through trust.
We trust our Peace-Provider because he himself is the Rock eternal.  This morning a song awakened me, a whisper as I walked outside, “Rock of Ages cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee.”
Pray with me:
Perfect Father, keep us in your perfect peace.  Of course we trust you because you are a Rock.  You alone are eternal.  God who lives in perfect peace, keep us in you, in your peace today.  In the name of the Peaceful Prince, we pray.  Amen.
