Apply to be a Math Learning Assistant!
The Math Learning Assistant Program is looking for undergraduate students with excellent math and communication skills to proactively engage with students in several 1xx level LA-supported Math courses that meet Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
On campus and in person, LAs may assist with student learning in lectures, discussion sessions, and study sessions, and participate in weekly meetings with the course coordinator and occasional meetings with the program coordinator. There may be some opportunities to work online as well.   New LAs generally work around seven hours each week. The hourly rate for these paid activities is $16. All LAs are expected to keep accurate records of their activities and time, and to update and submit these records when they are due.   In addition, to protect yourself and others, LAs at work must comply with all UIC Covid and other health regulations in the classroom, in meetings, and in the Math and Science Learning Center.   New LAs—there are no exceptions—are required to participate in NATS 200, a weekly one-credit hour course about teaching and learning for math learning assistants and science peer leaders. There are two sections of this course, meeting in person each week on either Tuesdays at 11 a.m. or Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Once you have been accepted as an LA, you will be permitted to register for this course.
As a Math Learning Assistant, you agree to meet all your program commitments on time with your full attention. You must be able to manage your time and other responsibilities, including your own coursework, while fulfilling these commitments. The only acceptable reason for absence is illness. If you feel that you have a genuine emergency or an exceptional situation, you must contact the Program Coordinator and instructor as soon as possible.
If you understand the expectations of the program and wish to apply, here is what you must do to be considered for a position:
1. Complete the detailed LA Application;
2. Complete the brief application on Handshake for this MSLC Peer Learning Assistant position (#5193961) so that you will be officially in the UIC Job system;
3. Respond to this email with a copy of your Fall 2022 Banner course schedule saved as: Last name_First name_ScheduleWe understand that schedules may change. Please keep us informed throughout the application process and once you are hired of any schedule changes that would affect your availability during the workday, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m – 6 p.m.)   If you have any questions about the program or application process, please feel free to contact the Math Learning Assistant Program.
