Upcoming Professional Development
Attention all superintendents and principals:
Submit an application to bring a team to a free, three-day summer institute at Princeton University on July 18 - 20, 2016 (for new applicants only). Those who attended last year's program will receive a separate invitation.
The summer institute will focus on the development of school/district projects that stress Arts-Infused Instruction in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
Arts infusion, a model of arts integration, is a strategy that identifies shared concepts—like equivalency in math, dance and visual arts, or conflict in reading and theater—in which the concept means the same thing in each discipline. When students learn core concepts through arts-infused pathways, they often develop a deeper understanding of the concepts they are studying. Teachers report that students in arts-infused classrooms are more interested in the content of the class, and that they participate more fully in the learning activities and projects. In addition, learning that is aligned with CCSS offers students opportunities to develop strengths in key 21st Century Skills. Creating, collaborating, critical thinking, communicating, persevering, and developing a growth mindset are core arts skills woven throughout the College and Career Readiness Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematical Practices of CCSS.
Registrations, which should be sent to Karin Marchione (kmarchione@njpsa.org), are due by April 15. Selected teams will be notified by May 13 at which time an institute agenda will be provided.
Questions may be addressed to Dr. Mary Reece (mreece@njpsa.org) or 609-860-1200.
