Live at the Dietrich - by Margie Young

Heidi Houser by her Nutcracker display at the Dietrich Theater
In this joyous season of celebration and giving, I would like to share three recent experiences in our little corner of the world, instances that show the incredible decency of people showing me why I love to live in Tunkhannock.  The first instance was shared with me by Hildy Morgan, a story she wanted to write about in her column, a column she did not live to write. Let me write the story for her. People who knew Hildy know that she was an advocate and caregiver to many feral cats, feeding them faithfully for many years. She told me that she was checking out a huge order of cat food at Walmart a few months ago when she reached into her purse to find her wallet, she realized she did not have it.  She described how embarrassed and panicked she was, searching her purse once more, when the cashier said, “Don’t worry. Your bill of $200 has been paid.” Hildy turned around to find out who paid it and told the woman behind her that she would pay her back and thanked her profusely. The woman replied, “No. Just pay it forward.”
Hildy I have now told your beautiful story. Now I have two more recent experiences I have had that make me so proud of our community. I love to walk my dog at our beautiful parks and after one recent walk, I realized that I did not have my wallet.  Could it be at the park or the grocery store, the last two places I visited? I checked each to no avail.  I decided to report it to my bank and credit card companies, to protect my accounts, when two days later I got a call from Erica to tell me that my wallet had been returned to the Dietrich, because I had my old Program Director business card in it, returned with all of the cash and credit cards. A young man and his father had found it at the park and took it home and returned it to the Dietrich.  What a relief!
The second experience I want to share is that my parked car was recently damaged in the parking lot behind the Dietrich. Our security camera captured the incident, but what is amazing is that the man who did the damage left a note on my car and even went into the theater to report it and leave his information. Even though I need to go through the hassle of getting my car repaired, my faith in humanity and the human decency of people is renewed.
It was Hildy Morgan who started the tradition of free showings of It’s a Wonderful Life every Christmas, a story of decency and community, a story that is reminiscent of our little community of Tunkhannock and beyond.  It is such a fitting story at this time of the year.  Since the year the Dietrich Theater reopened in 2001 we have treated everyone, with the help of sponsors, to this film that reminds us what is really important in life. This year we would like to thank Ron & Abby Kukuchka and family for sponsoring the film.
I went to the afternoon showing of It’s a Wonderful Life and got there in time to get a seat in our Evans Theater.  I just happened to sit next to a couple from Noxen. They told me that this was the 10th year that they have come here to see it.  I asked what they liked best about the movie and the answer was “The message of the movie.  The theme that community is more important than anything.”
Yes. And it was our community that brought the Dietrich Theater back in 2001. It was our community that enabled a grass roots group, led by Hildy, to reinvent the Dietrich as a movie theater and cultural center.  So Hildy, it was very fitting that someone paid your bill for you, and a reminder to all of us to “pay it forward” whenever we can and however we can.  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to our entire Dietrich Community.  We thank each and every one of you.
