Reading Buddies
One of the goals of Elysian is to do as much as we possibly can to create a community of learners. Having reading buddies is a longstanding tradition to meet that goal. Reading buddies is a time when our youngest learner’s class partners with an older grade. Students are given a partner who the teachers think would be a good personality match - and they meet as often as possible to read, learn new things and complete projects together.
This partnership helps our youngest students connect and get to know our older students. While the upper grade students can seem really big and tall to them, they quickly become almost like family to the younger students.
This partnership also helps bring out the very best in our older students. To see them nurture and read to the littlest learners is one of the joys of my day. The smiles on both sets of faces when they are together reminds me about how quickly our students grow. I think going back to the kindergarten or first grade classrooms is a delight to revisit the place where their educational journey began.
Best,
Susan

Food Drive Update
Thank you to everyone for their contributions during the Elysian Charter School Food Drive benefiting the clients of the Hoboken Homeless Shelter.  We delivered two full carloads of food including many boxes of the students' favorite cereals!  Thank you to the ECS climate team for organizing these efforts.
In an effort to build on our support of the shelter, we will be collecting reusable grocery bags for the next two weeks. These bags will allow clients to bring food home and allow you to get rid of some extra bags before the holidays. We will also deliver books to families at the In Jesus Name pantry.
We hope that these efforts help others and give children a sense of community and the importance of giving back.
