Celebrating First-Gen College Students |
Last week, we hosted our annual First-Generation College Student Celebration. The event featured engaging activities, games, and a mini resource fair. A ceremony included remarks from First-Generation Student Club Clerk Chris Rodas, ASIVC Vice President of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Candy Velazquez, MESA Program Interim Director César Montenegro, and Vice President for Student Services Martha McDonald. IVC Eligible to Apply for Department of Education Postsecondary Success Recognition |
IVC has been selected as one of the top 100 community and technical colleges in the nation eligible to apply for the U.S. Department of Education’s Postsecondary Success Recognition program. This new award program is part of the Raising the Bar initiative, which aims to increase postsecondary completion rates, close achievement gaps, and ensure students graduate with valuable credentials that lead to fulfilling careers. 13th Annual IVC and Saddleback Student Research Symposium |
The IVC and Saddleback Honors Programs recently hosted their 13th Annual Student Research Symposium. Of the 111 research projects that were presented, 83 were from IVC students. Topics ranged from sleep deprivation and the impacts of loneliness and social isolation to the evolving capabilities of Artificial Intelligence language models. The event featured an inspiring keynote address by Dr. Kristen Skjonsby, Professor of English at IVC, titled “The War on Terror and Me: Research as a Method of Interrogation.”

IVC Honors Native American Heritage Month |
On November 13, we hosted an event to celebrate Native American Heritage Month. Native-led nonprofits and community organizations were present alongside local small-owned Native businesses. The Blas Aguilar Adobe Museum & Acjachemen Center, along with the California Cultural Resource Preservation Alliance, showcased artifacts and provided insights into the history of the Juaneño/Acjachemen people, their traditions, and the influence of Spanish colonization. Women's Soccer Closes Out Season with Best Record Since 2014 |
The Irvine Valley women's soccer team finished up its 2024 season with a 2-0 defeat against Golden West in an Orange Empire Conference game on Friday at home. Irvine Valley still finished with a record of 10-10-1 overall, which was the best record for the program since 2014 when the Lasers went 12-4-6 overall. Read More »

From Homestead to Higher Education: Ann Reichling's Journey |
Ann Reichling, now 72, graduated from high school in 1970 during a period of significant unrest on college campuses. “I was on track to go to college, but when Kent State happened, I said ‘I’m not going’,” she recalls, referring to the Ohio university where four students were killed and nine injured after National Guards shot into a crowd of people protesting the war in Vietnam.
