Daily Devotional with Dr. Duane Brooks

Romans 5:9-10
Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him!  For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
New International Version (NIV)
               “How much more?”  Do you ever ask that?  How much more rain can the ground absorb?  How much more pain can one of our friends endure?  How much longer will we have to wait for our difficult circumstances to change? 
                Paul uses this phrase twice in these two verses.  He is arguing from lesser to greater making an “a fortiori” argument.  “Since we have been justified by Christ’s blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him.”  Paul knows we are justified, so he knows even more we will be saved from wrath.  If God reconciled us when we were his enemies through Christ’s death, how much more shall we be saved through his life.  If Christ’s death is powerful enough to reconcile us to God, won’t his life even much more save us? 
                Think about all of the amazing things God has done for us in Christ.  Now imagine with me, “How much more . . .”  How do you fill in the blank?  I don’t know what God has planned for us as his followers, but I believe it is much more than we think.  How do I know?  If he has blessed us this much in Christ, how much more will he bless us in the future?  God knows.  Really, God knows!  I can’t wait to see!

Father, you love us more than we deserve and more than we can imagine.  We never dreamed you would bring us this far.  Whatever your ultimate purpose for us is in making us like your perfect Son, we pray that you would help us to grow one step closer today.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
