(USS) Undergraduate Summer Scholarship Program 2023 Call for Applications

A total of 100 USS Research Fellowships are available for summer 2023.  Selected students must carry out the mentored research project during Summer Term dates (May 16 - Aug 4, 2023).

Miami University's Office of Research for Undergraduates facilitates USS with the primary goals focused on student-centered learning through mentored research. This 9-week summer program aligns with Miami's focus on offering active, engaged educational experiences for our undergraduates. Department chairs and program directors will determine the review process for USS applications to ensure eligibility of the undergraduate student, faculty/staff mentor(s) and proposed research project. Responsibility for a successful program will rest with the student scholar, the mentor(s) and the primary mentor's administrative unit (departments and programs).
USS Program Application Preparation & Submission (SEE Section III, USS 2023 Program Guidelines)
The individual student is responsible for finding an eligible mentor. The student and the faculty member(s) who agree to mentor the project) will collaborate to design the independent research project and to write the USS proposal. The student is responsible to email the completed USS application to the department chair or program director of the student's USS mentor by the deadline.

(USS) Program Funding Supplements Announcement
One of Miami Teacher Scholars Program Initiatives is the Undergraduate Summer Scholar (USS) Supplements is providing additional funding that will be available in FY23, 24, and 25. 

* The USS student fellowship will be increased by a 600$ supplement bringing the amount to $3,200. Student recipients will report on the USS experience through mechanisms such as presentations within the annual Undergraduate Research Forum or similar venue. 

* Faculty project mentor(s) may check a box on the USS application Page 1 to request up to $600 for a combination of supply funding and faculty professional development. Faculty will include written budget justification and a line-item budget as Page 5 of the USS application pdf submission. Note: This is separate from the budget justification for 200$ that has been available for student projects through the Office of Research for Undergraduates.

Returns to an in-person display of research posters during 3 poster sessions throughout the day in the Shriver Center John Dolibois Rooms, Oxford Ohio. Save the date for this signature celebration of inquiry, creativity, and knowledge creation. This celebration builds on a rich tradition of showcasing scholarly and creative works conducted by our undergraduate students, under the guidance of dedicated mentors.

Search the PathwaysToScience.org database of 600+ summer research programs for undergraduates in all STEM disciplines. These are all fully funded opportunities including programs sponsored by NSF, NASA, NIH, etc.  Start your search in November, typically, application deadlines are in early January and February.

Ohio Academy of Sciences (OAS)
Miami University recently joined The Ohio Academy of Science as an Institutional Member. Because of this, you are now able to join the Academy at no cost. You must use your organization’s email when completing your Membership Registration, so the Academy can verify that you qualify as part of Miami’s membership.

3. Under the Individual Membership plan select either Professional or College Student

6. Under Billing Option, please select Bill Me (pay by check). The discount code you entered will be applied to your membership and the bill will show a zero balance.
7. Complete the form and click submit.

HOW TO JOIN CUR Open the CUR page www.cur.org  Navigate to the very TOP menu.  Click Join. Next, click on the "Activate My Enhanced Member Benefits".  Fill in the form. Council on Undergraduate Research publications and outreach activities are designed to share successful models and strategies for establishing, nurturing, and institutionalizing undergraduate research programs. Faculty, staff, administrators, students, and colleagues from all types of academic institutions and organizations form the dynamic CUR membership.
