On March 9, the University of Chicago announced plans to establish the Mansueto Institute for Urban Innovation, supported by a $35 million gift from alumni Joe and Rika Mansueto.

The new institute will play a key role in an emerging comprehensive and integrative urban strategy of the University, focusing on issues that are critical to communities in Chicago and cities around the world—including improving health care, understanding and enhancing the wellbeing of urban youth, developing effective housing policies, and reducing violence. The announcement of this new institute follows the creation of UChicago Urban Labs in March 2015 and builds on efforts that are making the University and our city a center of urban scholarship and research. The Office of Civic Engagement will work closely with the Institute as we seek to make a positive impact through collaborations with UChicago faculty and students and organizations across the city.

Applications open for IMPACT Leadership Development Program
The Chicago Urban League, in partnership with Chicago Booth School of Business, has opened applications for the IMPACT Class of 2017. The program was created to support the professional and personal development of rising African American professionals to prepare them for increasingly responsible leadership roles in private, public and non-profit organizations and their boards. IMPACT connects these emerging leaders with one-on-one assigned senior African American leaders, who act as their mentors throughout the duration of the program, building a much needed network of support and collaboration.
$100 million initiative enhances UChicago's commitment to lower-income students
On February 17, UChicago received a $50 million challenge grant from Harriet Heyman, AM’72, and her husband, investor Sir Michael Moritz to support the Odyssey Scholarship and Collegiate Scholars programs.

The Collegiate Scholars Program is one of several Office of Civic Engagement college readiness initiatives for local students. The grant will allow the University to increase the number of Chicago Public School students it accepts into the highly competitive program, offer the summer component to all 108 scholars, create an endowment for the program.

Partner Spotlight: Sheldon Smith
Sheldon Smith, CEO and founder of the Dovetail Project, has been selected as one of CNN’s 20 ‘Heroes of the Year’.  The annual honor is bestowed upon “everyday people doing extraordinary things to change the world.”

The Dovetail Project was one of the first organizations to join the core program of the University of Chicago's Community Programs Accelerator,  which provides a range of resources to nonprofits whose work improves the health and vitality of mid-South Side neighborhoods.

The Dovetail Project gives young African-American fathers the support they need to be better fathers for their children and better men in their communities by providing them with job opportunities and training, as well as the soft skills needed for parenting.
