Dear GW Business Community,
As we embark on a new semester, it’s with great enthusiasm that I, on behalf of GW Dean’s Diversity Council, welcome our entire community—new and returning students, faculty, and staff. This is a time of new beginnings and renewed commitments, where each of us plays a role in shaping a campus environment grounded in mutual respect, collaboration, and inclusivity.
I provide regular DEI updates that keep us informed about upcoming cultural heritage months, events, and all the latest initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. These updates ensure that everyone stays engaged with our ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive environment and celebrate the rich diversity within our community.

Hispanic-LatinX Heritage Month
|
This month marks Hispanic-Latinx Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15 to October 15. It’s a wonderful opportunity to learn about the history and contributions of the Hispanic-Latinx community.
We encourage you to visit the the American Latino Museum | National Museum of the American Latino (located on the first floor of the American History Museum), and join a kick off event. There will be a tour of the Molina Gallery this Sunday, September 15, 2024, at 2:00PM to initiate Hispanic Heritage Month. There will be tours Thursday through Sunday, at 11am and 2pm. Tours are about 45 minutes long.
If you're looking to experience a lively blend of culture, food, and music, Fiesta DC is one of the largest Latinx festivals in the U.S. The event will take place on September 21, 2024, along Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. You can expect a day filled with vibrant performances, authentic Latin American cuisine, and a parade that showcases the diverse traditions and cultures of the Latinx community.
You can also learn more about and engaged in the GW Hispanic and LatinX community at the GW Multicultural Student Association, Latine Community.

Our school has a Lactation and Feeding Lounge (Duques 156A), All Use Restroom (Duques 156B), and Meditation and Prayer Room (Duques 656) that provide accessibility for those who need space for prayer and meditation, those with lactation and feeding needs, and those who prefer all use restrooms. I thank the Equity and Access working group of the DEI Council, and Ocieola Newby, for their continuing efforts to further improve accessibility.

In October, we will have Professor Robert Miller, Arizona State, give us a talk on the Doctrine of Discovery as a segway to the National Native American Heritage month in November. The talk will be on October 25, 2024, and details will follow. I thank the DEI Research and Teaching group of DEI Council, and Prof. Arthur Wilson, for spearheading this event.
