Psalm 118:5-8
When hard pressed, I cried to the Lord;
    he brought me into a spacious place.
The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.
    What can mere mortals do to me?
The Lord is with me; he is my helper.
    I look in triumph on my enemies.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in humans.
New International Version (NIV)
                I could never be a spelunker.  Climbing in a cave would not work for me.  I avoid tight spaces at all costs.  You have heard the expression but have you ever been “between a rock and a hard place?”   One of the words in the Bible for tribulation is a word which means to be pressured from all sides.  What do we do when we feel hemmed in on all sides?  We cry to the Lord and he gives us some breathing room.
                The psalmist found real help in God’s presence.  The Lord is with us.  We need not fear what people do to us.  The Lord is our helper and enables us to triumph.  Where do we find our hope and help?  We can either take refuge in the Lord or trust in humans to get us through.  The psalmist had discovered that God is most reliable.  Have we?
                An old Star Wars movie reminds me of the claustrophobic person’s worst nightmare:  remember the scene where the walls are closing in and there is no escape.  Good news:  you and I are not buried under the circumstances today.  Nor are our problems impossible to overcome.   God is our refuge.  Call out to him today and breathe freely.  You are safe in his love.
Pray with me:
Father, thank you for the protection you provide.  Even more we thank you for the promise of your presence.  Help us to live in the freedom of those who have found refuge in you.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
I want to invite you to join me in memorizing 52 passages this year from the 2017 set of Fighter Verses.  You can find the Fighter Verses App at the App Store on your phones or via this link  http://fighterverses.com/the-verses/fighter-verses/As we study the Bible this year, let's look at each text and learn what it says about God.
