Nearly 29 million people in the United States aged 12 and older dealt with alcohol use disorder (AUD) in the past year. Nearly 55,000 Americans died of cirrhosis or chronic liver disease in 2022. The prevalence of these and other related comorbidities makes alcohol use disorder a significant public health issue in the U.S.
According to the National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse (NIAA), Alcohol Awareness Month “is an opportunity to update your knowledge about AUD and the adverse impact of alcohol misuse on health and society.”
“Alcohol-related problems continue to take a heavy toll on individuals, families, and communities,” NIAA stated in its recent news release. “Researchers estimate that each year there are more than 178,000 alcohol-related deaths, making alcohol a leading preventable cause of death in the United States. In addition, more than 200 disease and injury-related conditions are associated with alcohol misuse.”
The ATTC Network regional centers create and maintain valuable resources which address AUD, providing support and education for individuals and professionals alike. Here is a roundup of some products, tools, and events you can find from around the network to help support Alcohol Awareness Month in your local community.
