Message from the Executive Director

As most of you close out your school year, LAPCS applauds your school communities for all the hard work you've put into your classrooms.
Thanks to everyone that joined us at the Capitol, responded to our surveys, attended our board training sessions, answered our calls to action, and donated to LAPCS.
Keep in mind; our 2018-19 membership drive is now underway. We are counting on your continued support. Your membership matters to the work we do to support, promote, and advocate for the nearly 80,000 students attending Louisiana's 148 public charter schools.
Our job is to find ways to make your job easier so that you can focus as much of your limited time, money, and energy on the students you serve.

Finally, our summer will be busy as we travel the state with Bottom Line and Top Shelf programs, kick off our Charter Board Leadership Academy, and monitor yet another special legislative session. And we hope to see some of you at the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools Annual Conference in Austin in June.

Thanks again for all you do on behalf of students, educators and the families you serve. Have a great summer!

Regards,
Caroline

10 Charter Schools Partner with Johns Hopkins University in Redesign Program

The Louisiana Department of Education, in partnership with Johns Hopkins University, announced the launch of the Louisiana High School Redesign Cohort, a network of 31 high schools across the state that will work together to rethink the core components of their high school design. Public charter schools in East Baton Rouge, Jefferson, Lincoln, Orleans, and St. Landry Parishes will participate in the redesign cohort.
The cohort will provide an opportunity for select high schools to collaborate with their peers and national experts on how to reimagine both school structure and services to boost positive student outcomes and prepare graduates for college and career.

MEMBERSHIP: Show Me the Benefits

We count on you to support our vision for a Louisiana where all children reach their full potential. LAPCS is celebrating 11 solid years working to improve education in our state by supporting, promoting, and advocating for excellent public charter schools. This year we even have some new benefits to offer our amazing members.
LAPCS creates useful and practical professional development programs to support charter school leaders, administrators, and board members. We provide valuable resources and bring the experts to you throughout the year across the state:
  • Bottom Line: In-person training events, on-call consultation, and work-group collaborations in the areas of Finance, Operations, Human Resources, and Leadership Development.
  • Top Shelf: Governance recruitment, training, strategic planning, and customized retreats for Board Members and School Leaders to ensure long-term charter school success.
  • Legal Handbooks: Resource guides created by LAPCS staff in partnership with local attorneys and Louisiana Appleseed to make compliance with charter school law as easy as possible for charter school boards and administrators.
  • NEW: Charter Board Leadership Academy.
RENEW NOW!
NEW: Louisiana Association of Public Charter Schools is excited to announce our partnership with Charter Board Partners (CBP) to present the Charter Board Leadership Academy.

This academy is a selective program that consists of a series of workshops that cover the most critical issues facing charter school boards. The goal is to create a pipeline of dedicated, talented leaders from a wide range of backgrounds to serve as the next generation of leaders in Louisiana public charter schools.

THE CAPITOL SCOOP:

Recap & Wins

This regular session was one of the hardest in recent memory--partly because of the unusually long hours at the Capitol due to the shortened schedule (despite the same amount of bills filed) and partly because of the "and charter schools, too" phenomenon that we've mentioned previously.

As always, there were some good wins for charter schools (defeat of the TRSL mandate, HB 25), as well as compromises (parent board member mandate, SB 89) and a few losses (last minute TRSL/Charter School resolutions, SR 248).
