Dear Traveler: The leaves are leafing. The flowers are blooming. The waterfalls are waterfalling. The white squirrels are . . . well, they’re squirreling. In short, everything is happening. And just in the nick of time, too, because the countdown clock on summer has already started. But while you’re waiting to get your feet wet (Sliding Rock does not open until Memorial Day, and that water is cold, friends), there are a lot of ways to jump right on into the season with art, music, outdoor adventure and my favorite local festivals. It’s really beautiful up here in Transylvania County this time of year. It’s a perfect time to find your path and start to explore. May the Forest be with you, The Adventurist

Go Nuts
The White Squirrel Festival
Downtown Brevard
May 27-29
Voted Western North Carolina’s best spring music festival, this free, three-day event combines a rocking street festival, food, crafts, beer and plenty of innovative approaches to the theme of white squirrels (we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Squirrel Box Derby). Brevard’s favorite furry mascot really brings the town together, so you can expect to see plenty of folks come out to cheer their favorite bushy-tailed costume and stay on for performances by renowned roots, rock, folk and country acts like Town Mountain, Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors and Sarah Siskind and Sunliner. Shake your tail over here for more info
