Dr. Stuart Orenstein and Joanne Schoenfeld come from totally different educational backgrounds, but they converge in their love and support of SBCC. Stuart’s family knew the value of education and encouraged him in his studies. He attended Bronx Science High School and went on to earn his medical degree from Albert Einstein School of Medicine.
Joanne was the first one of her family to attend high school. She was an excellent student and editor of the school newspaper; therefore, she assumed that she would go to college. Her parents did not. After much discussion they reluctantly agreed, so she was able to attend California Western University where she earned her teaching credential and spent several productive years in the classroom. She later opened her own real estate brokerage.
As a former teacher and a current volunteer assisting high school students find their career path, Joanne is so impressed with SBCC’s effective programs that channel students into a four-year education, as well as the large number of vocational and technical programs available to students who choose a different path. Stuart takes classes at SBCC’s School of Extended Learning (“Adult Ed”) that relate to his broad interests and continues his love of learning. He is always impressed with the dedication of his fellow, usually younger, classmates.
"The decision to support SBCC was a natural one," Joanne said. She and Stuart make an annual contribution from the required distribution from their retirement funds and have designated a legacy gift in their estate plans.
