From the New Camp Hayward Director
Hi everyone, I’m Allie and I’m the new Director of Camp Hayward! I have been the Assistant Director here at camp for the past four summers (under Jessie, who was also my first-ever co-counselor!), and I am very excited to take on this new role. Prior to becoming Assistant Director, I was the Pathfinder Unit Leader for two years and then a counselor and Junior Counselor before that. Throughout my time working at camp, I have absolutely loved seeing so many campers grow and mature, and have had the pleasure of working with many of my own campers on staff!
I graduated from Syracuse with a BA in psychology and education, and have my MA from Boston College in higher education administration. I am originally from Natick, MA and aside from college, have lived in Massachusetts for my entire life. During this time of year, you can often find me skiing up in the White Mountains in New Hampshire!
During my first month as Director, I have been busy interviewing and hiring an amazing group of staff for this upcoming summer, and Asa and I are getting ready to head overseas next week to hire some great new international staff. I can’t wait to see so many familiar faces back at camp in a few months, and to welcome all of our new campers and their families as well! See you all for summer 2017!

Burgess Farm

The Burgess Farm provides a place for campers and Adventure Trips participants to learn about living sustainably. Produce from the garden and eggs from the ducks and chickens are used in the Burgess, Hayward, and Adventure Trips kitchens (with the Trips participants cooking for themselves!).
The new production field allows Adventure Trips participants to serve the surrounding community: they help with weeding and harvesting in the field, 100% of the produce from the field goes to food pantries on Cape Cod, including the Falmouth Service Center. In its first year, the production field yielded about 500 pounds of fresh, organic produce for pantries!
The new barn has dramatically increased program space and participant capacity at Burgess Farm, while also enabling us to encourage a new generation of empowered craftsmen and craftswomen. Stocked with a variety of tools, the barn allows participants the opportunity to design, build and perfect their own projects. Many participants find reward in building and creating things at camp for camp itself, such as benches and signs. Some of the projects that campers worked on in 2016 were gliders, Rube Goldberg machines, Leopold benches, signs, and birdhouses, and artistic projects inspired by camp!

Outdoor Education & Retreat Center

We are still accepting applicants to work as residential instructors for Burgess Outdoor Education in 2017! This seasonal position is an opportunity to work on a team of outdoor enthusiasts who wish to instill wonder, encourage stewardship and cultivate community for the hundreds of young people who attend our facility in the spring and beyond. Prior teaching experience is not required, but a desire to work outdoors and with kids definitely is! After a two-week training period, you will be prepared to teach hands-on science classes, lead fun and engaging teambuilding programming, and continue your growth as a teacher and leader. If you or someone you know is interested in joining our team please direct them to learn more at: http://campburgessandhayward.com/employment/
Our outdoor Education staff work with a variety of schools and universities, non-profit organizations, corporate groups, scouting groups, and church groups. We provide excellent programming in the areas of team-building, recreation, environmental science, outdoor skills and adventure. Learn more about our classes, facilities and bookings.

Year-Round Programs
The challenge courses at Camp Burgess & Hayward provide multi-season opportunities for personal development and team building, while immersed in beautiful acreage of Camp.
Our low ropes course, high ropes courses, and climbing tower are great for a wide range of ages and abilities. Each element, whether solo or team focused, encourages goal setting, group encouragement, and fosters a sense of accomplishment.
Our philosophy is based on these activities being challenge-by-choice, where the participants push themselves as far as they are comfortable. Camp is a wonderful space for these challenges because we provide a safe, supportive environment in which to grow and learn about oneself and peers.
Whether working as a group on our low ropes course or the team challenge course, cruising through the solo course with encouragement from friends, summiting the climbing tower, or enjoying the ride down the zipline, the challenge courses at Camp offer a variety of fun and self-discovery!

With the construction of the new Camp Hayward dining hall and cabins, we have been able to expand our capacities, making our programs accessible to more girls each summer - and more groups and community members throughout the year.

Thank you 2016 Supporters!

Thank you to our generous donors, volunteers and event participants for all of your support in 2016. We are incredibly grateful for the many individuals – camper families, alumni, staff and community members – who have made a difference in the lives of the children and families we serve.
In 2016, more than 275 people participated in our programming on “Camperships” – scholarships made available through your gifts. We are so fortunate to be able to make our programming accessible to all, and to never have to turn anyone away due to their financial circumstances. This mission has only been realized because of your continued support.
We are also so excited to announce that we have completed phase one of our capital campaign, raising $2 million to make critical capital improvements, including the construction of the new Hayward dining hall, Burgess Barn, four new cabins at Camp Hayward and two tree houses - one each to be built at Burgess and Hayward.
With the addition of two new cabins at Hayward in 2016, the camp was able to accommodate 64 additional campers, who had previously been placed on a waitlist. The construction of the cabins coincided with the construction of the new 10,000-square-foot dining hall. Two more cabins are slated to be built at Hayward prior to the start of Summer, 2017.
By investing in and strengthening our facilities, we are embracing the opportunity to continue shaping lives for good; we are ensuring Camp Burgess & Hayward will be poised to broaden the reach of its mission for generations to come.
On behalf of the entire Camp Burgess & Hayward community, I thank you for your commitment and support of our cause.
With my very best wishes for a 2017 full of outstanding outdoor experiences,
Meghan Hill
