Is blood thicker than water? To whom do we owe our greatest loyalty? My friend Ralph West once said, “A friend is someone who walks in when the world walks out.” Do you have a friend like that?
David and Jonathan shared an uncommon friendship. David was a rising star, but Jonathan’s father, King Saul saw him as a threat. Jonathan offered greater loyalty to David than he did to his own father. For him, a common commitment to the Lord was greater than his ancestry and his place in Saul’s dynasty. Jonathan loved David so much, he conceded his own future throne, trusting David would show kindness to him and his family. Who does that?
In our insular world, many of us struggle to find strong friendships. Where will we find a friend who sticks closer than a brother? Jesus is that friend. He gave up his throne and his life to save us. Wasn’t his blood thicker than water when he poured it out for us on the cross? Jesus has shown what kind of friend he is to us. What kind of friends are we to Jesus?
