Acts 16: 1-5
Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek. 2 The believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. 3 Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey. 5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.

New International Version (NIV)
“If you ever see a turtle atop a fencepost, you know he had some help getting there.”  When I shared those words, spoken originally by author Alex Haley, my friend Bill painted a picture of it from his imagination. I have kept it as a reminder of all the help I have received. Who mentored you?

Paul was mentored by Barnabas, and in spite of their differences, he passed it on to other young ministers. On the journey with Silas, Paul found Timothy. Timothy had a Greek father and a Jewish mother who had become a believer. How did this relationship go? In his first and second letters to Timothy, we learn more about how much he helped Paul. Timothy joined him in the work of delivering the Jerusalem decision to the churches. The churches became stronger and grew in numbers daily.

Years ago, Larry Nixon, my pastor in college, sent me out to the second and third churches I served as pastor. On a dark day in our lives, he walked into a hospital room, unexpectedly, unannounced, blessing me and Melanie.  I once asked him, “How do I pay you back?”  He answered with his customary grace:  “You don’t owe me.  But if you ever see a young minister, invest in him.”  I’m still doing that today.  The least we turtles on fenceposts can do is to help other turtles.   As the Lord brings mentors to mind, send a note to someone who gave you a hand up.

Pray with me:
Father, thank you for helping us through your people. Bring to mind today those whom you have used to bless and help us.  Make us grateful and generous today. As we give thanks for help received, let us offer help to others today. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Our Monday through Friday devotionals will start in the book of Acts this year.  We will not hurry through the book.  We want to see what the Holy Spirit did in the early church so that we may discern what he is doing in us and through us.  Join us for these devotionals as we learn together about our King and his Kingdom in the world.

We also invite you to join us as we read through the Bible. Copies of the reading plan are available at Tallowood Baptist Church, or download your copy here:
