Silver spring: ILR turns 25!

Spring 2022 will be a semester to remember as we commemorate our 25th anniversary. Some of us have the hair color to match this silver milestone, while others have newly discovered all that ILR has to offer. Either way, we're thrilled you're here and invite you to join us this semester as we celebrate a quarter-century of Engaging, Enriching, and Enlightening our community. Since 1997, we have focused on making a positive difference in the lives of the lifelong learners of our community. We trust you'll agree that we are fulfilling our mission.
We proudly introduce our 25th anniversary semester sponsors, The Knolls of Oxford, Miami University Global Initiatives, and Berkeley Square. Due to their generous support funding this semester, we are planning to offer a 25th-anniversary celebratory luncheon on May 4th. Save the date!  Stay tuned for further details.

Throwback Tuesday pic

History loves company

Where were you in 1997? You certainly remember where you were living and maybe even the car model you were driving when a fillup of gas was a mere 55¢ per gallon. But do you recall any of the historical happenings that year
In 1997, many of you were right here, in ILR, witnessing our first steps as we found our sea legs. For "Throwback Tuesday," take a look at the spring and fall course bulletins from the year 1997. You'll likely recognize many familiar names, reminisce fond memories, and realize just how far ILR has come.

All hands on tech

Join our team! Our recent shift in delivery from in-person classes to a broader array of virtual offerings has created the need for additional volunteer support. Tech Team members assist our instructors in both virtual and physical classrooms (your choice). If you're comfortable on a computer and familiar with the basics of Webex or Zoom, we'll train you to become a VIP team member. Volunteer today!

A special collaboration

ILR has partnered with the Humanities Center to bring you two exciting opportunities.
Launched in Spring 2021, the "Objects that Changed the World" series lives on through recorded lectures that are now available to you. Recognizing that the most important things in our lives are often the most overlooked, this online lecture series invites us to contemplate objects that fundamentally reshaped the human experience. From concrete and porcelain to the birth control pill and the first blues recording, each talk in this nine-part series explores the history and cultural legacy of a transformative human creation. We invite you into the virtual classroom to recall the central role of the humanities in a Miami education and modern society.
Coming in Spring 2022, ILR will host the Humanities Center's "People who Changed the World" series as part of our semester curriculum. Stay tuned for further details.

Pack your bags

Back by popular demand, we'll again be offering The Chautauqua Experience, September 11-16, 2022. Since it began as an educational experiment in 1874, Chautauqua Institution has grown into a mecca for lifelong learners. Situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Chautauqua in western New York, the Chautauqua Institution is known for its bustling summer season. This unique Chautauqua experience takes place in the “off-season” of fall and spring, and it lets you and your fellow lifelong learners have the grounds mostly to yourself. Enjoy exclusive Road Scholar courses while staying on the institution’s peaceful, scenic grounds. During your stay, explore exciting themes such as art, music, literature, science, politics, religion, and more. ILR Special Events Committee members Bob and Marilyn Johnson attended the 2021 Chautauqua and reported it was a wonderful experience. They are ILR's Road Scholar liaisons and are available to answer your questions via email at rjohnson2@woh.rr.com. Get ready for the educational opportunity of a lifetime! Learn more...

"I took this class myself last Spring and it was a wonderful experience - all of it - the student, the time for creative reflection, so well done virtually. It was good for my soul." ~Ann, past participant
