| We commend the bravery of the law enforcement on the scene in Colleyville, Texas at this past Shabbat. We also applaud the courageous leadership of Congregation Beth Israel’s Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker. This traumatic situation is a sobering reminder that we must continue to combat and condemn antisemitism in America. Federation is dedicated to strengthening security in our Jewish community. Learn more about our community security efforts here, and read on to register for an upcoming security training by our partners at Secure Community Network. May we continue to work towards a future in which people of all faiths and identities can live and worship freely and without fear.

| And In the Seventh Year: Shmita Then and Now
Haberman Institute for Jewish Studies and Congregation Etz Hayim
The Bible tells us that every seventh year will be a Shmita or sabbatical year. In the Shmita year, debts are to be forgiven, agricultural lands lie fallow, private landholdings become open to the commons, and staples such as food storage and perennial harvests are freely redistributed and accessible to all. How was this actually practiced in Biblical and later times? What does it look like in Israel today? What are the social and ecological repercussions of such a practice? Join a panel discussion moderated by Rav Natan Freller, with author and ecologist, Rabbi David Seidenberg, and Hazon’s Bruce Spierer.
