You're Invited: DC Consortium Student Conference on Evaluation and Policy Organized by Trachtenberg Faculty and Students
The 6th Annual DC Consortium Student Conference on Evaluation & Policy (DCSCEP) is a graduate student-organized, one-day evaluation conference, to be held virtually on Friday, April 26. The goal of this conference is to provide graduate and other post-secondary students in the fields of evaluation and policy an opportunity to present original research and network with professionals and faculty in those fields. Members of the planning committee for this conference include Trachtenberg Professor Kathy Newcomer and Trachtenberg students Nathan Varnell and Arub Butt. Over Spring Break, MPA student Samuel Boateng Sarfo spent time on his research examining the relationship between higher education and income. He also spent time on a project that analyzes a proposed policy by the DC government to make bus services free within the state, and an initiative at the Regulatory Studies Center to determine how the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) determines significant rules.

Over Spring Break, MPA student Abbie Ferguson presented a paper, Fostering Belonging in the U.S. Foreign Service of Tomorrow: DACOR-UDC Mentorship Program, at the National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS). Her panel included participants from University of the District of Columbia, Temple University, and the DC Legacy Project. NCOBPS is organized to study, enhance, and promote the political aspirations of people of African descent in the United States and throughout the world and promotes critical analysis and research of topics usually overlooked and/or marginalized in political science scholarship.
Catania Offers Advice on Accessible Digital Content Across Mediums at the GW Diversity Summit

Trachtenberg's newest staff member, Jane Catania, joined the Trachtenberg team as our Communications and Marketing Manager. In February, she participated in GW's 9th Annual Diversity Summit where she was part of a panel, Engaging Everyone: An Exploration of Digital Accessibility Across Mediums, alongside several other GW colleagues. Their presentation covered the essentials of creating accessible digital content, optimizing social media posts and stories, and advocating for a more equitable online space. Balla's Recommendations Now Introduced in Congress

Professor of Political Science and Trachtenberg Faculty Member Steven J. Balla, GW Law Faculty Emily Hammond, and former Trachtenberg Research Professor Bridget Dooling wrote a report titled Mass, Computer-Generated, and Fraudulent Comments with recommendations that were recently introduced in Congress and reported out of committee. According to Professor Balla, the committee vote was bipartisan, showing broad consensus for the report recommendations.

Steve Redburn authored Opportunities for Management when Budgeting. Despite an evident need to invest in greater government capacity, recent history suggests that a constrained federal budget environment will bring pressure for cuts in administrative spending. He proposes a smarter strategy of investing in greater administrative capacity and removing impediments to agile and responsive government. Listen to the Gov Navigators podcast for more details. Trachtenberg doctoral student Travis Reginal was inducted into the GW chapter of the prestigious Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society earlier this month. The Society, chartered jointly by Yale and Howard Universities in 2005, now includes 18 chapters at universities around the country. The chapters' members are student scholars who exemplify academic and personal excellence, foster environments of support, and serve as examples of scholarship, leadership, character, service, and advocacy for those who have been traditionally underrepresented in the academy.

The Trachtenberg School hosted the 2nd Annual DC Public Management Consortium Conference earlier this month. Bringing together doctoral students and faculty from a range of universities, this conference fostered discussion on public management research and built stronger ties across public affairs schools.
