Dean's Message:
Those of us who live, work, or study in west Michigan are familiar with how much Lake Michigan influences on our climate through the “Lake Effect”.  At GVSU we are proud of the collective impact that the Laker community has – our own “Laker Effect”.
I invite you join me in enjoying the activities highlighted in this newsletter.  Every story speaks to the impact that GVSU faculty, students, staff and alumni are making in the world today.  These wonderful activities range from outreach to K-12 students to serving the west Michigan community and helping advance medical technologies.  The impacts are local, regional and international.  They include helping save lives and our environment.
Please enjoy the wonderful work of the Laker community.
Dean Plotkowski would love to hear from you! If you have questions or comments, feel free to follow this link to Connect with the Dean
Using Sunlight to Save Lives
Graduate students from the School of Engineering designed and built three portable solar-powered systems for a hospital in a rural part of the southeastern African country of Malawi under the direction of Dr. Heidi Jiao. In August 2016, students and staff delivered the devices to the Embangweni Mission Hospital. Designs of the devices are available through SolaRescue, an open-source repository for devices that power medical equipment with solar energy in the developing world.
“The power outages effects our patients here at Embangweni very much because our operations depend on energy” Dr. Ishmael Nyirenda of the Embangweni Mission Hospital stated, “and this is in line with options that we do...we depend on the power. So if there is no power, it means our operations are on stand-still, and that can lead to loss of lives.”
