Friday Night Naturalist Program |
Beetles, Cicadas and Dragonflies |
|
|
Most Florida children and adults are familiar with the loud calls heard during the day that are made by cicadas. You may have found their skeletal remains on the trunks of trees or shrubs. Most widely known because of media attention and the large number that emerge every 13 or 17 years are the periodical cicadas. But Florida doesn’t have these well-known cicadas instead we have 19 cicada species which are grouped into three types based on size. Often heard but seldom seen, the cicada is one of those mysterious insects that is often taken for granted.
Another small insect with 42 species found in Florida are beetles. Beetles have biting mouth parts and are predators of other insects and invertebrates, though some are plant eaters. And, of course, Floridians are familiar with dragonflies also known as mosquito hawks because of their habit of preying on mosquitoes. They spend years as a nymph in the water to emerge as the adult dragonfly we are familiar with seeing.
On November 17 starting at 6:30 PM, Taylor Jones, Insect Collection Curator will give a presentation titled Beetles, Cicadas and Dragonflies featuring the specimens in the Trout Lake Nature Center’s (TLNC) collection. This presentation is part of the Friday Night Naturalist series given monthly on the third Friday.
TLNC is located at 520 East CR 44, Eustis. Non-members must pay a $5/vehicle entry fee. Or, obtain an entry receipt from the Eustis Memorial Library using their library card. As a non-profit, TLNC depends on grants, donations and entry fees to pay its bills, maintain its programs and make improvements. For further information on this program, call 352-357-7536.

2,000 years ago the Ancient Greeks were the first people who looked up at the night sky and divided up all of the stars into 88 groups. They named each for creatures, things and people who were part of their legends and stories.
Retired Lake County Schools Planetarium Director Mike Ryan wants to share with you a fabulous story about the five star groups that are part of a terror tale known as the Andromeda Legend. Star charts of these five constellations in the night sky during this part of the year will be given.
