Marie will then submit the form to the workflow for approval by the UW-Madison Division of Extension 4-H Positive Youth Development Program. Once approval is received, the gathering may proceed. Each kit includes the supplies necessary to complete the learning experience in your home. Sign up is open until April 15th for the May kits and May 15th for the June kits. The May and June project kits are described below.
MAY
- Agriculture Science 2 - Looking for ways to learn more about agriculture and life science? Consider this 4-H project kit. Learning activities will be from the Acres of Adventures 4-H project curriculum -- Book 2 and will focus on learning from four categories:
Agriculture Gone Wild-Youth go on the wild side with activities and learn how science has figured out ways to make agriculture “go crazy” (corn in diapers, wheat in paste, soy lecithin in “quick” drinks.
Farm Physics-learn a few ideas that a farmer might need to create an ingenious solution where physics and farming work together.
Frontier Living-learn about the lives of early pioneers and how they depended upon the things we take for granted.
Insect Invasion-youth will learn about insects, their effect on agriculture and how farmers learn to cope
- Cake Decorating - Do you know there is styrofoam under many of those really cool cakes you see at a County Fair? YEP, many of those decorated cakes showcase the skills of the decorator. In this Explore 4-H at Home Cake Decorating kit, we will be focusing on the DECORATING part of the Cake Decorating project. You will learn about different tools to use, prepare icing that is the proper consistency, and develop skills to create borders, drop flowers, leaves, lettering and more.
- Cloverbud - Using a variety of resources, you will get to try out some cloverbud spring activities. There are several different resources for cloverbud activities, some will be items to make, and others will be some things to try, learn and reflect. Some activities include: gardening projects and things to try outdoors.
JUNE
- Sewing and Textiles - Using the 4-H STEAM Clothing series from University of Nebraska at Lincoln, we will explore some basics of sewing. Projects will be introductory sewing and will require users of this Explore 4-H Project kit to use their own sewing machine. The “Let’s Sew!--A Beginner’s Sewing Guide” by Nancy Zieman will also be referenced. There will also be a Halloween textiles project that will not require the use of a sewing machine, but rather will use skills for following instructions and using tools to cut and create with deco mesh.
- Cloverbuds - Here comes SUMMER - let’s get outside and EXPLORE! The June Cloverbud Explore kit will be full of activities to explore nature. You will go on a scavenger hunt for signs of wildlife, learn to identify different types of birds and plants, collect objects from nature, learn how seeds travel, and create some fun nature inspired art pieces.
- Animal Science - Using the Veterinary Science Project curriculum, we will explore what you need for animals. From their basic needs, to body language and some areas in between. No matter what kind of animal you may have this information can be helpful to learn. You may also get some ideas for non-animal exhibits for the fair.
