Free admission, small soda and small popcorn for all who attend.
Presented by: the Dietrich’s Veterans Connecting: Meetup & Workshop
Sponsored by: Coterra Energy
Join us at the Dietrich to see the 2008 film favorite Gran Torino starring Clint Eastwood on the big screen. Gran Torino tells the story of retired auto worker and Korean War vet Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) who fills emptiness in his life with beer and home repair, despising the many Asian, Latino and black families in his neighborhood. Walt becomes a reluctant hero when he stands up to the gangbangers who tried to force an Asian teen to steal Walt's treasured car. An unlikely friendship develops between Walt and the teen, as he learns he has more in common with his neighbors than he thought. Tickets are available by calling 570-836-1022 x3 or at the theater’s ticket booth.

Live at the Dietrich - by Margie Young

Join us for a Maple Sugaring presentation with Keystone College's Sugar Shack on Saturday, March 29 at noon.

Spring has sprung at the Dietrich!  The harbinger of spring is our witch-hazel in bloom in our rain garden in the back of the theater. Have you seen a robin yet? I saw one robin yesterday at Riverside Park in Tunkhannock. And another sign of spring is that the Master Gardeners of Wyoming County and the Penn State Extension will be back for a free Gather and Grow: Community Plant and Seed Swap on Saturday March 22 from 10:00 a.m. to noon. You are invited to come and get inspired to start your own seedlings.  Then stay for a special presentation at 10:30 a.m. of Plant Myths Debunked. I always feel that this event is the start of spring for me. I don’t always have seeds to share but come away with som to plant in my peat pots that are waiting for them.  For information about this free program, call the Dietrich at 570-836-1022 x3.
Another sign of spring is maple sugaring.  For the first time on Saturday, March 29 at noon we are partnering with Kelley Stewart and Abigail Hayford of Keystone College’s Sugar Shack for Maple Sugaring: From Sap to Syrup – A Sweet Journey Through the History, Science and Art of Maple Sugaring. Beginning with the tapping of the sap to enjoying the delicious taste of syrup and other products will be explored, giving you a chance to learn more and even taste one of nature’s sweetest gifts, that has been harvested right here in Pennsylvania from indigenous peoples to the present.  I use maple syrup whenever I can substitute it for refined sugar, so I will be there for sure. Call the number above for free tickets.
Our indigenous past is all around us, so it is so fitting that we learn all we can about it.  Right here in Tunkhannock are the Iroquois Trail and the Seneca Trail and Seneca Park.  On Saturday, April 12 at 11:00 a.m. Leon Briggs will present Haudenosaunee and the 7 GenerationsLeon is an enrolled member of the Tonawanda Seneca Nation, Hawk Clan from the Tonawanda Seneca Territory, proudly known as the Keepers of the Western Door. Where did the Haudenosaunee come from? Where are they today? What are challenges for them today? What are their triumphs? You are invited to this free presentation to learn.  Leon is also passionate about teaching indigenous knowledge of plants and food sovereignty.  What an opportunity to learn about our indigenous past.  To get free tickets stop by the ticket booth or call the Dietrich at the number above.  This program is sponsored by the Endless Mountains Heritage Region, PA DCNR and the Wyoming County Commissioners.
The very next day our WVIA friends will be back on Sunday, April 13 at 3:00 p.m. for Miss Austen WVIA Preview, another free event. Miss Austen is a literary mystery reimagined by Gil Hornby and coming to PBS May 4.  And you can come to the Dietrich for a free sneak preview of the first episode. WVIA Sneak Previews are always so much fun – with background information and trivia questions and prizes. Chris Norton always makes it fun. All of us Jane Austen fans will be there. And so can you. Call the number above to reserve tickets.
Erica just told me about a free movie event on Thursday, May 1 at 6 p.m., sponsored by Wyoming County CARES (Coalition on Addiction: Research, Educate and Support).  The movie is Rocketman, the story of Elton John’s rise to fame, including his beloved songs and his personal journey through substance abuse disorder and recovery. It will be introduced by CARES and will end with th Q & A session.  This is a free event and all are invited. Those who attend will also receive a small popcorn and a small soda. A big thank you to CARES, for all of its important work for our community.
Next week I will tell you about the Winter Fest Post Film Festival Discussion, the day after the last day of the festival, the discussion of some of the most thought-provoking films I have ever seen. I know so many people keep the film festival brochures so that the films can be streamed in the following months.  But the good news is that Spring Fest is only a little more than a month away. Yes.  Spring Fest with its gala on opening night is from Friday, April 25 to May 15.  We don’t have to wait very long.  Happy Spring to everyone.
