In a memorable "Far Side" Cartoon, Gary, the artist pictured a deer with a perfect target on its side. Another deer comments, "Bummer of a birthmark." Do you ever feel like you are wearing a target?
David ran for his life for so long. The Prophet Samuel's anointing did not usher in David's kingship immediately. In a way, God's choice of David as King while Saul still reigned put a large target on David's back. There must have been times when he wanted to stop the world and get off the merry go around.
How is your confidence level these days? What are you sure about? In an unsettled world, we may lose confidence in our own security, in our government, in our future. When world events shake our confidence, we may ask ourselves, "Whom can we trust?" One of our young students, a fourth generation member of our church testified at Camp Tallowood, "I did not trust God with my life until yesterday when I became a Christian."
After David found rest from his enemies, he wrote a song to celebrate God's protection. His confidence in God did not waver. David trusted God's perfect way and God's flawless promises. Because God was his refuge, he always had a shield. Knowing the Lord as his Rock and Refuge changed David's perspective on life. He placed all of his confidence in God's strength. If we are not going to trust God today, then whom will we trust?
