1 Corinthians 10:31-33
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.  Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God— even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved.
New International Version (NIV)
Self-centeredness is incongruent with the Christian life.  What we may call “good self-esteem” and confidence may negate the deep dependence necessary to be faithful to God.  God cares about people.  All people.  So those with the right self-esteem confidently care for others.

Paul encourages the Corinthian believers to care about others.  He goes so far as to say, “I have made myself a slave . . .”  Some of the Moravian Brethren took this to heart.  In order to reach a group of African slaves in the Caribbean, they sold themselves into slavery.  As fellow slaves they shared the good news of freedom in Christ.  This may seem extreme and radical to us.  Frances Chan says so called “radical” Christianity is both normal and normative.  Peter calls Christians to follow in Jesus’ steps as he went to the cross.

Spurgeon captured it, “Churches that do not care for outsiders quickly suffer from disunity and strife.  What unites a church completely is the calling out of all its forces for accomplishing the Redeemer’s grand objective.  This passion for saving souls not only employs but also draws forth the strength of the church."

Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for Christ’s sacrifice for us.  Show us how we may follow his example in order to reach the people who seem to have no access to your goodness.  Give your church a burden for others.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
