The heavens declare the glory of God. Have you seen the new NASA Webb infrared images of the universe? Creation is more spectacular than we knew. This made me wonder. What does our worship say about God? Is he good? Is he great? On Sunday new friends from other cultures experienced their first Christian worship. What did they see and hear us say about God?
Solomon wanted to build the greatest temple because he knew God is the greatest God. In a world where idolatry prevailed, Solomon pointed to a God who was transcendent. Unlike the gods of the nations, God did not need a house because the heaven of heavens could not contain him. But the temple could become a place of sacrifice. So Solomon chose Araunah’s threshing floor where in a time of plague, David made a sacrifice to God which cost him something (2 Samuel 24:24).
Tim Keller tells about an amazing Bible teacher who taught him at a camp when he was a kid. She said, “If the distance between the Earth and the Sun, 92 million miles, was reduced to the thickness of a sheet of paper, then the distance between the Earth and the nearest star would be a stack of paper 70 feet high. And the diameter of the galaxy would be a stack of paper 310 miles high. That’s how big the galaxy is. And yet, the galaxy is nothing but a speck of dust, virtually, in the whole universe. And the Bible says Jesus Christ holds this universe together with the word of his power. His pinky, as it were.” And then she asked the question: “Is this the kind of person you ask into your life to be your assistant?”
