Scholars Fair exposes 800 high school students to college opportunities
Event builds on traditional college fair with specialized panel discussions and workshops

While many teenagers were enjoying one of the lazy days of summer, some 800 high school students from across the city got a head start on their futures when they visited the University of Chicago campus on July 13, for “Your Elevated Route to College,” a college fair co-hosted by UChicago’s Collegiate Scholars Program, the Illinois Institute of Technology’s Global Leaders Program, and Chicago Scholars. In addition to hosting more than 135 colleges from across the country, the day-long college fair presented workshops and panel discussions on topics ranging from essay writing and financial aid, to the importance of community service and civic leadership.

In this story, hear how the event changed the perspective of students like Nneka Jones, who said, “This fair has subsided all of my fears about going to college and has made me much more confident going into this process.”

Cultural partners infuse youth with arts

UChicago Arts partners offer nearly 40 different arts programs across campus for children, youth, and families. These include the Design Apprenticeship Program at the Arts Incubator, High School Student School Matinee Program at Court Theatre, a Teacher Professional Development Workshop Series at Oriental Institute, Family Saturdays at Logan Center, and inquiry-based tours for K–12 classrooms at Smart Museum. These campus arts organizations are now collaborating on a new K-12 arts education initiative designed to align the University's resources, deepen their collective impact on local schoolchildren, and better serve the community.

UChicago Innovation Fund invests in Array of Things

Since its inception, the UChicago Innovation Fund has awarded more than $3.1 million in grants to 35 promising technologies and start-ups created by University faculty, students, and staff. In the most recent cycle, the Fund awarded $150,000 to the Urban Center for Computation and Data for its Array of Things, an urban sensing network of interactive, modular sensor boxes built by Urban Center for Computation and Data. Argonne National Laboratory provided $150,000 in matching funds, which will support the installation of approximately 50 nodes in downtown Chicago and beginning of data translation for public use.

Event Spotlight: Under City Stone Dedication on August 19

The mural under the viaduct at 55th Street and Lake Park Avenue in Hyde Park was originally painted in 1972 by Caryl Yasko, one of the first female muralists in the country. This summer, Ms. Yasko has been working with her assistants, local students, and community members to restore her art. The other partners in the project are Chicago Public Art Group, Fifth Ward Alderman Leslie Hairston, and the University of Chicago. The Office of Civic Engagement is funding the restoration project.
