Through a new database and expert interviews on the ground, the research maps the landscape of China's clean energy innovation. Looking behind all the great numbers of China’s clean energy technologies and industries, such as R&D expenditure, patent and market share, this research investigates China’s actual innovation capacity and the strengths and weaknesses in the clean energy innovation system. Based on the findings, the research offers important insights into the policy challenges and opportunities.

Ping Huang is a Postdoctoral Scholar at CIERP and the Climate Policy Lab. He works with Prof. Kelly Sims Gallagher on a project of China’s energy innovation landscape funded by Breakthrough Energy Coalition, along with four other studies on United States, Europe, Canada and Mexico. The project will cooperate with the Chinese partner (Prof. Su Jun from Tsinghua University) to evaluate the strengths and weakness of China’s clean energy innovation system, and to conduct several case studies to elucidate best practices, experiences with failure, and challenges in the Chinese context. Prior to joining this project, he worked with Prof. Vanesa Castán Broto on urban energy innovation and transitions in China, based at University College London. As a visiting scholar, he also worked at Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University, with Prof. Marko Hekkert on China’s solar PV innovation system. He has published in key energy and transitions journals such as Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Energy Research & Social Science.
