1 Peter 2:9-10
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.  Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
New International Version (NIV)
I saw one of the flooded homes along Buffalo Bayou had been raised off the ground.  This week I noticed they had changed the stone work on the front.  It looks great.  I have always admired the work of brick masons.  When they bricked our buildings at Tallowood I loved how perfectly even the work was.

Everyone else called him Simon, but Jesus changed his name to Peter, “Rock,” or as one preacher called him, “Rocky.”  At times his life was rocky.  But then one day he saw the stone that had rolled away from the tomb.  Jesus restored him as his shepherd of his sheep.  Later when he wrote to the believers in the ancient world, he used an analogy.  Jesus was the living stone, the chief cornerstone.  Believers are like a building of living bricks, adjoined to and aligned with Jesus (2:4-5).

Some stumble over stones, but Peter believed better of the early apprentices of Jesus.  He gives them the same titles used for Israel in the Old Testament.  The church is a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession.  This is our identity in Christ.  From the smallest rural church to the great megachurches in the cities, this is who we are.  Our God, the great King has chosen us as his priesthood, nation and possession.  Who are God’s chosen people in the world today?  Christians!  He lives in us.  How then shall we live?

 Pray with me:
Father, we thank you for choosing us and building us into your church.  Help us to reflect your glory.  Align us perfectly with yourself today.  Help us never to forget who we are.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
This year we focus our Every Day with Jesus readings on Jesus’ story.  With references to Tallowood's Read Through the Bible in 2018 daily reading plan, let's focus our undivided attention on Jesus and follow where he lead. He will not fail. Neither will we!

Joyfully,
