“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”

Community Engaged Learning Highlight:
On Friday, April 21 2023 one of the two community engaged research and learning projects funded partially through the Campus-Community Collaborative Research Grant (CCCRG) program came to fruition as the "Planted in Place" exhibition opened at the Milton Municipal Museum. This interdisciplinary project brought together faculty and students from Management; Environmental; History, and Biology and was proposed last year as a proof of concept to model engagement with a community exhibition space in partnership with The Improved Milton Experience (TIME). The project is also part of an on-going exploration to establish a Center for Sustainability & the Environment partnered field station in Milton, akin to the community-centered Coal Region Field Station in Mount Carmel. Funding from the CCRG helped make this proof of concept possible.
The Bucknell team that led this ambitious community partnership consisted of Professors Claire Campbell, Chris Martine, Andrew Stuhl, Dr. Shaunna Barnhart, Director of Place Studies, and a first year student intern, Hannah Tran, who envisioned the design and layout of the exhibit. Over 70 students from across these courses (and Management 101) were involved in developing materials for this exhibition. In addition Hannah presented a poster about the project at the recent Sustainability Symposium, which currently hangs in the library as part of OCE's poster exhibit on engaged learning and research. We are excited to see this collaboration and the impact of work sponsored by our office, both in the form of the research grant and also the three CEL-designated courses that fed into this exhibit over the academic year.
If you are interested in exploring a community-engaged research project, please consider joining our May Plan, May 15-16 where we will be meeting with community partners and hearing about their priorities.
