Keith Green sang a somber song, “Nothing lasts, except the grace of God, by which I stand, in Jesus.” What is permanent in our world? Not much. Someone called a new employee in their company, “permanent.” It is not likely! Organizations rise and fall. Is there anything that stands the test of time?
Jesus. The writer of Hebrews contrasted Jesus with the mortal priests who were born, lived, and died. Jesus is a permanent high priest because he lives forever. This is good news for us! He is able to save us completely. No matter how long we live, Jesus will still be alive when we die. Initially, Jesus saves us when we come to God through him. Ultimately, Jesus saves us by interceding for us with the Father because of his own supreme sacrifice.
Our high Priest is both willing and able. Not only does Jesus intend to save us, but he possesses the power to get it done. He meets our needs because he is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Jesus’ death would not have saved us if he had not lived a sinless life. Not only is he pure, but he is powerful. Exalted above the heavens, Jesus, alone possesses the power to save.
My mom used to sing, “Only trust him. Only trust him. Only trust him now. He will save you; he will save you, he will save you now.” Count on it. Jesus will save us. Permanently!
