Bridgeport City News | Bill Finch, Mayor
August 29, 2014

Mayor Bill Finch speaks during a the grand opening ceremony of the Landmark, new apartments recently opened in downtown Bridgeport. Mayor Finch is joined by City Council President Thomas McCarthy, Brandon Hall and Brett Wilderman, partners at Forstone Capital.
According to Fairfield County Business Journal’s Crystal Kang, in Bridgeport “businesses are setting up shop, multimillion-dollar construction projects are breaking ground and consultants are finalizing designs to develop the city’s second train station.”
“The proof is in the pudding,” Mayor Finch asserted. “We have five investment teams investing in downtown buildings. John Morris is opening up Bass Pro Shops, and we have Gary Flocco at Corvus Capital, U-Haul, RemGrit, GE and DuPont all working with us. We have a very cooperative attitude when it comes to our administration working with investors.”
The projects Mayor cited include:
• Bass Pro Shops is building a retail store at Steelpointe Harbor;
• Corvus Capital Partners is renovating several derelict factory buildings along Interstate 95;
• RemGrit is the site of the former Remington Arms factory that will be demolished and turned into a second train station.

Bridgeport will receive $3,176,000 to revitalize three deteriorated properties while Stratford gets nearly that much to clean up an old industrial site, the state announced on Wednesday.
Bridgeport will receive a $2 million loan to remediate a 12.2-acre parcel in the South End/Seaside neighborhood. The completed project there envisions 1,200 residential units.

"Construction to start on Bass Pro Shops" - CT Post

Vertical construction on the Bass Pro Shops that is the centerpiece of the long-awaited Steelpointe Harbor development will begin "within the next 30 days,'' a city official said last week.
The concrete pad for the 150,000 square-foot store has been readied, and the various city permits needed to build it have been filed.

RowAmerica is expanding its reach even further in a 53,000-square-foot facility in Bridgeport, where the company will not only distribute its own WinTech Racing line and the King brands of shells, but will also create models of the former.
The Bridgeport facility will also serve as the headquarters for dock construction, the painting and repair of all types of rowboats and the expansion of the RowAmerica clubs throughout the country.
The building couldn't be in a better location; it lies just yards away from Seaside, Bridgeport's waterfront park.
“Bridgeport launches new security system to crack down on bullying” – News12
The city is using 21st-century technology to help address bullying in schools and keep kids in safe learning environments to prepare for 21st-century jobs.
“As the father of four kids who have attended Bridgeport public schools, I've seen firsthand the negative impact that bullying has on kids and their ability to learn,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “As a community, we need to do everything we can to prevent it and intervene quickly and stop it when it does occur.”
On Thursday, more than 23,000 Bridgeport Public Schools students returned to the classroom.  Over the last year, as part of the city’s effort to crack down on bullying and keep kids safe in schools, the city has invested in equipment to do just that. And, through a $1.3 million state grant, Bridgeport has enhanced safety at 19 city schools. The upgrades and new initiatives focus on promoting a safe and healthy environment for students to learn.
Enhanced technology is just one component in the effort.
In the week leading up to the first day of school, police have worked on a traffic awareness campaign around schools. Click here to listen to the City of Bridgeport's radio ad.
Three digital messaging signs were placed at locations near schools reminding motorists that school was about to resume and to drive carefully. Five radar trailers were placed near schools to keep motorists driving the speed limit, and patrol and traffic officers were conducting enforcement near school zones.
"Cashing in on Concerts"
– CT Post
The city’s weekly concert series ended with a group of cover bands on Thursday, putting an end to a summer full of music, dancing, socializing and, perhaps most importantly, of dining at local restaurants. The outdoor “Downtown Thursdays” shows, which began in mid-June, were kicked off in 2010 and have increasingly grown in popularity.
The series is organized by the city and the Downtown Special Services District.
People from across the region and state have traveled downtown to enjoy the free concerts, said Brett Broesder, a spokesman for Mayor Bill Finch.
“It provides people from across the city with an opportunity to further enjoy our up-and-coming downtown,” he said.
And as more people visit McLevy Green to enjoy the reggae, indie rock, funk/soul, old school hip hop and Latin music, they’ve also been taking the time to explore the downtown’s dining options.
