Talk Like a Pirate with an NYU Linguistics Professor

Laurel MacKenzie, an NYU associate professor of linguistics who studies dialectology, language change, and varieties of English, explains the origins of some common pirate phrases and sounds—some dating back to the 1700s. Turns out a lot of it has to do with Hollywood.

October 5 & 6 / 11:00am EST

Help kick off the Brooklyn Museum’s 200th anniversary celebration with Birthday Bash. This full weekend of programming highlights the best of the borough and marks two centuries of championing Brooklyn’s artistic communities. Bring the family for music and karaoke, dance and poetry, gallery tours and art-making, piñatas, and so much more.

This program is free; registration is required and includes Museum general admission.

Sign up for fall volunteer opportunities in Prospect Park! Volunteering is a fantastic way to connect with fellow community members while giving back to Brooklyn’s Backyard. These opportunities are available for non-profit community groups of up to 15 participants during public weekend programs.
