Dear Traveler:

Have you been outside lately? It’s gorgeous. The sun’s out. The flowers are blooming. And all the early spring rain means the waterfalls are running at full tilt, which is always exciting for fans of a plunge (though it’s still a bit chilly for an actual plunge). It’s beginning to look so much like summer that I’ve had to caution the white squirrels about sunscreen. No one wants to see a pink squirrel, after all.

Speaking of white squirrels, May happens to be a big month for our acorn-hoarding brethren. They have a whole festival (and a pretty darn good one) to get ready for. There’s also art and adventure, craft beer and an opportunity to combine waterfalls with wine tasting if you feel like multi-tasking — in short, there’s a little of everything to help you warm up for the season. It takes practice to have this much fun. So let’s get to work.

Fans of the cinematic catch will want to circle this date on the calendar for this all-out fish film fete, with food, raffles, giveaways and, of course, delicious beer. Bring your favorite film-watching chair and settle in for this free, al fresco movie event for anglers and cinephiles alike. 

Fans of high speeds, sleek curves and high-end German engineers will enjoy this midday parade and festival of nearly 100 Porsches between England Street and Oaktown Avenue. Wander around, imagine yourself in the driver's seat and welcome these drivers, collectors and enthusiasts to Transylvania County. 

For those of us who look at a 10K or 30K up the lush trails around Pisgah Forest’s Cradle of Forestry and think,  “Sure, I could beat my best time,” the Cradle to Grave Race will certainly hit the spot. Serious trail runners (and the cheering sections for serious trail runners) will enjoy a challenging course, the magnificent scenery of Pisgah National Forest and an award ceremony featuring live Music and Oskar Blues brews.

You may not (and probably don’t) remember the good old days when some of Brevard’s beautiful historic homes became part of the landscape, but this afternoon wandering through Silvermont Mansion, the Lankford-Cleveland House, the Charles Orr House, Hemlock Hill and many others should take you right back. Wear your comfortable walking shoes and prepare to stroll right back into the past.

What has whiskers, a bushy tail, more than a dozen bands, food, arts & crafts, beer, a Squirrel Box Derby and a Memorial Day Parade? It’s the 2018 White Squirrel Festival, a toe-tapping, activity-filled, unforgettable festival that fills the streets of Downtown Brevard for three days of music and fun. This year’s line-up includes Devon Gilfillian, Jeff Sipe and the Page Brothers, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds, Leah Blevins, Pretty Little Goat, Songs from the Road Band, Clint Roberts and many, many more.
