July Email Newsletter 2020

From the Camp Director,

I would have never thought I would have had a June with very few kids at camp. Someone once said, “you don't know what you have until it's gone.” Of course, the camp is not “gone” in a literal sense, but not having summer camp this summer sure does make me appreciate what we had! Yet, the thing that keeps me going is the realization that this is not a situation that will last forever.

There is such an odd feeling walking around the camp and seeing all the empty buildings , especially the Chapel that is usually filled with young people worshiping God and hearing the Word, but it's all very quiet now.

Many of the Psalms are quite encouraging, and my mind goes to a few verses in Psalm 27:13-14: (NIV) 13 I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. 14 Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.

While all of us might honestly say that our patience is wearing a bit thin, I would encourage you to keep your confidence in the Lord as you navigate these uncertain times. Use these days to draw close to the Lord, and I know He is clear in the Word that He will draw near to us!
I'm very excited that we have churches that are planning to bring kids to camp in July. It will be so good to have some kids back on our property.

To all of you campers we love you and miss you!

Blessings in Christ,
Gary Baker, Executive Director

North Salem Christian Church Camp:

North Salem will be having a camp here at Hanging Rock for those going into 6th -12th Grade and they have invited anyone from our churches to attend. The dates are July 19-23. You will need to register through North Salem to attend. You can email them: northsalemcc@gmail.com. Rob Baire is the Minister and will be the Event Coordinator of this Camp. This is a great opportunity to be able to send your child to camp this summer.

Camp Refund/Finance Update:

With 600 campers registered for the various camp sessions we have almost completed all of the refunds for the summer. We are waiting to hear from 8 churches and 10 families. We are very thankful for the over 30% of churches and families that have chosen to donate either all or a portion of their registration fees. We know this is going to be a HUGE challenge for us financially. It looks like we are going to have to borrow money to pay our bills for the next few months. We would really appreciate any donation you would make to help offset the expenses for this year's budget. The more donations we get the less we will need to borrow.

Golf Scramble:

Orginally this golf scramble was to raise funds for the girls dorm, but with our summer camp canceling and refunding camp fees this golf scramble will be needed for the general fund.
We are very close to getting 18 holes filled for the day. We would love for you to participate if you could put a team together or sponsor a hole.
Registration forms and more information can be found on our website.

Wilderness Update

Greetings from the back property! June has been a crazy month to say the least. We have been busy though getting things ready for future events. We all know what it is like to have a to-do list, right? We all know what it is like to work on said list. We all know what it is like to get tired of looking at that list. Oh, I am alone there?! I doubt that I am the only one who thinks that way at times. It is nice to get things marked off the list, but there comes a time when a change of pace is also needed. We have gotten things marked off our list, things I only dreamed of getting done!
Myself, my intern Andy, and our work crew of summer staffers have been hard at work in our paintball area, our wilderness area, and our walking trails! We have cleared brush, cut down trees, burned brush, sprayed weeds, built forts, put up a tire swing, painted picnic tables, and a whole host of other projects! When we are tired, and feeling like our work is just busy work we have to remind ourselves that what we are doing will help the camp for years to come! Here are some pictures of all the work that we have done. The list is still there, and probably growing daily, but it will be nice to have campers here in the month of July!

Minister's Day Retreat in June

Not very often do we get to invite the Ministers of our supporting churches to come and enjoy the camp in June. So on June 18th we did just that!  Dave Sims lead some songs of worship and Scott Longyear shared some encouraging words. They enjoyed pork chops off the grill and participated in the zipline, horse back riding and just relaxed. We are very grateful for these servants and we were glad to serve them. Below is some pictures of their time here.

Needs List:

New Dishwasher - $7,000
Old pickup truck - to be used for horse camp
4X4 SUV- Very used but running for wilderness
Duraberm for driveways and parking lot - $5,000
